Forbes JAPAN

My new Forbes JAPAN column, “Where Questions Give Rise to Questions,” has launched.

The central theme of the series is how companies can incorporate the conceptual leaps and forms of expression associated with art into their own activities. Its central hypothesis is that art can become significantly more effective for businesses when it is connected not only to artistic practice itself, but also to research.

Understanding does not simply proceed linearly from problem to solution. It is nonlinear, much like the way children come to understand the world by repeatedly asking, “Why? Why?” We often hear that asking questions is important, but perhaps what truly matters is not merely posing a question, but allowing one question to lead to another. It is within these chains of questions that deeper understanding begins to emerge.

The series therefore explores whether it is productive to connect the questions generated by art’s conceptual leaps with those arising from the systematic thinking of research. This interaction between art and research—and the chains of questions it produces—is the central subject of the series.

The first article examines this potential through concrete examples drawn from actual collaborative projects with companies.
